Drug Fight Malawi

History and Legal Status

Drug Fight Malawi is a legally constituted NGO, registered under the Trustees Incorporation Act (Cap. 5:03) of the Republic of Malawi. Its use of “Malawi” in the organization’s name was approved by the Office of the President and Cabinet. Founded in response to rising substance abuse—particularly among young people—Drug Fight Malawi delivers advocacy, prevention, and education programs that equip youth with knowledge about drug misuse, its consequences, and the skills to resist peer pressure. The organisation also runs advocacy and community buy-in programmes designed to build local support, engage stakeholders, and strengthen partnerships for sustained impact. The organisation was registered on 4 December 2002. Drug Fight Malawi is membership-based and welcomes individuals and groups who wish to join.
Operating with the commitment to promote public health for all through policy advocacy, engagement, and education in Tobacco Control, reduction of alcohol consumption, and control of other substances of use.

Governance Structure

Drug Fight Malawi is governed by a Board of Trustees consisting of a minimum of five elected members and a maximum of seven. Board members are democratically elected by members present at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and serve on a voluntary basis for three years.

In addition to the elected Trustees, the Executive Director of Drug Fight Malawi sits as an ex-official member of the Board without voting rights. The Board meets three times a year, with extraordinary meetings convened when deemed necessary.

The Executive Director, appointed by the Board of Trustees, serves as the chief operating officer responsible for day-to-day operations. The Executive Director is supported by program managers, an accountant, program officers, and dedicated volunteers.

Board members are required to take an Oath of Office, administered by DFM's legal representative at the AGM, committing to uphold DFM's principles of accountability.

Malawi Alcohol Policy

DFM initiated and spearheaded the development of the Malawi National Alcohol Policy, adopted in 2017.

School Outreach Program

Reached 11,000+ secondary school learners with education on the truth about drugs.

Alliance Building

Initiated and led formation of NGO Alliance for Tobacco Control (13+ members) and Malawi Alcohol Policy Alliance.

Research & Advocacy

Produced Tobacco Industry Interference Index Reports (2023, 2025) contributing to WHO FCTC Article 5.3 implementation.
